Edgy and unapologetically urban, Thieves comes across as cooler than the average eco-conscious clothing line.Designer and founder Sonja den Elzen constructs her creations with earth-friendly elements such as hemp, tussah or "wild" silk (which allows the silkworm to live), organic wool and cotton, lyocell, bamboo, and soy. She avoids the sweatshop aspect by producing all pieces locally in Toronto.
Rather than seeing sustainability as a limitation, the designer draws inspiration from the natural world employing earthy creams, charcoals and greys, and printing the fabrics with graphics reminiscent of Native American art.
Breezy and cool while maintaining some serious glamour, there is a continuity to the collection that seems to tell a story. Experience Thieves at 1156 Queen Street West in Toronto.
